Compton (Name TBD)
The Compton Innovation Center will be a transformative, urban mixed-use development which will serve the residents and innovators of Compton, helping to make Downtown Compton into a world-class destination that all of the City's residents can enjoy and benefit from. This will include up to 300 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, of which 58 (20%) will be affordable to very low-income households. Residential amenities to include a lobby, lounge area, fitness room, swimming pool, in-unit washers/dryers and more. The site will also include community serving commercial space in addition to a large Innovation Center. There will be sufficient parking for both the commercial and residential use as well as a public pedestrian plaza. All of which will be accommodated in a seven-story building that will be broken up into different vertical sections and will bridge over Willow Street.
The Innovation Center is envisioned to be a 40,000+ square-foot campus designed to foster innovation in technology, arts, entrepreneurial concepts and more for Compton’s innovators. This center will provide learning labs, co-working, and product development, ”makers" labs, studios, and recreational space for artists, writers, musicians, designers and tech developers by creating a state-of-the-art, high-energy
atmosphere for learning, collaboration, and production.
A public pedestrian plaza will be created by closing Willow Street to non-emergency vehicle traffic. This plaza will become the focal point for the site and the nearby district; features may include public art, outdoor dining, mini performance spaces, mobile vendors, public seating, and vegetation. In addition, two spaces for commercial retail uses of 7,234 sq. ft. are planned and may be used for a variety of commercial retail uses, including food services. The City of Compton will provide public resources to support the cost of the parking garage, site/infrastructure work, capital to support the affordable housing units, and other public space to support this development (the plaza, street, curb and sidewalk widening, etc.)
The site plans are set to occupy two sites located at 501 and 601 E. Compton Boulevard.
